Phu Quoc Island is a very mountainous and densely forested Island, approximate 600 sq kms situated in the Gulf of Thailand, shaped like a “tear” its approximate 48 km in length south to north at its longest point and 19 km at its widest point in the north.
It has a population of approximate 100,000 people and is 45 km’s west of Ha Tien on the Vietnamese mainland and approximate 5 km off the south east coast of Cambodia near its northern point.
This supernatural island is surrounded by a number of smaller islands mainly to the south and arguably has some of most beautiful beaches in Vietnam as well as some of the best seafood.
Phu Quoc is not really a part of the Mekong delta and also it doesnt share the same extraordinary ability as the Mekong delta to pro duce rice or fruit, this is mainly due to the lack of soil quality and the inaccessible terrain on the Island.
Phu Quoc is however home to reputedly the best Fish sauce (nuoc mam) in the world, slowly however Tourism is catching up as main source of revenue with Seafood still the main industry in Phu Quoc, the Island is also well known to produce high quality pepperthat is exported all over the world.
